Every time I think about when we were traveling in Mexcio, I think about Frida Kahlo. A Mexican self-portrait artist. But also a feminist icon, the reflection of a strong, independant woman. She suffered lifelong health problems caused by a traffic accident she survived as a teenager. Recovering from her injuries isolated her from other people and influenced her work. In her artwork she used vibrant colors to express her pain and passion. When I look at her paintings, the emotions are so visible. She once quoted: " I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best". It takes a big amount of courage to look at yourself in the mirror, to accept and reflect your emotions and pain, to be vulnarable, to expose yourself. That is what I admire in her. She reminds me of taking the courage to see and expose myself the way I AM. Another quote from her I love : "I used to think I was the strangest person in the world but then I thought there are so many people in the world, there must be someone just like me who feels bizarre and flawed in the same ways I do. I would imagine her, and imagine that she must be out there thinking of me too. Well, I hope that if you are out there and read this and know that, yes, it is true,I am here, and I am just as strange as you."
